Each emergency call to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA presents a distinctive blend of emotions and challenges in the realm of first responders, but this particular incident sent shivers down our spines. It occurred on Sunday, July 2nd, when a concerned Delft, The Hague resident made a distress call to the Inspectorate of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA for urgent intervention. The caller had witnessed a dog seeking refuge beneath a concrete slab, only to be sealed off by an unidentified group of people who then covered the area with sand.
Beneath the layers of concrete and sand, a dog fought desperately for survival, from the cold and suffocation.
Without hesitation, the life-saving excavation efforts commenced. Inspector Lee Prins understood the urgency of the situation. In a race against time, he rushed to the location and painstakingly dug through the mound of sand, his heart sinking with every passing moment.
"It felt like an eternity, but I had to keep reminding myself that panicking wouldn't benefit the dog relying on me," shared Inspector Prins.
Finally, after being uncovered, the dog was found curled up in a small ball. Inspector Lee Prins feared the worst upon seeing the emaciated creature. "When I reached him, he was motionless, and I thought I had arrived too late," recounted Inspector Prins. Fortunately, this was not the case. Courage, as the dog was later named, was still alive, though it appeared he had resigned himself to his fate.
"This act of cruelty is utterly heartless," remarked Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse. "We are immensely grateful to the compassionate person who alerted us. Without their call, this dog would have endured unimaginable suffering. We will spare no effort to identify those responsible for this heinous act and ensure they face the consequences."
At the SPCA Hospital, the dog received the necessary medical care. Despite being dirty and malnourished, he found solace and warmth in the hospital's care. Soon after the rescue, Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse paid a visit to the rescued dog, extending a friendly greeting.
The doggie savoured much-needed chin scratches, an entirely new and delightful experience for him.
Once admitted to the hospital, Courage underwent a thorough assessment by the veterinary team. Surprisingly, he tested negative for various diseases, which had been suspected due to his lethargy and skin condition. Thankfully, his condition was attributed solely to neglect and malnutrition. Courage now receives a liquid nutritional supplement and vitamin B to boost his immune system, enhance appetite, aid digestion, and improve overall vitality. Additionally, he is intermittently fed Hills a/d to aid his recovery.
Next on the agenda was a vital and soothing warm bath.
As the warm water enveloped him, Courage couldn't help but wonder, "What's this? I could get used to this!" Shampoo, gentle hands, and more attention than he had ever experienced—truly a treat!
Courage also received a prescribed bath with F10 Germicidal Treatment Shampoo to address his skin condition.
"I may be patchy and my muscles may have wasted away, but I'll be looking good in no time! Keep an eye out," Courage seemed to declare.
And a treat or two from behaviourist Nicole Nel, because he's such a good boy!
Although it has only been a few days since Inspector Lee Prins's heart-pounding rescue, Courage still has a long road to recovery ahead. However, he's a courageous pup, giving it his all and winning hearts along the way.
Today, Courage, the once-trapped dog, realizes he is cuter than his current appearance suggests. He knows that things will improve because, deep down, he's still just a pup.
